Kevin Schulte Honestly, I don’t collect anything, unless you count music, which I’m going to. I used to collect music in the form of records, cassettes and CDs. You know, during that era when we just learned how to make fire, and we were painting on cave walls. Yeh, I’m old I get it. When I was a teenager, records were replaced with cassettes. Then cassettes were replaced for CD’s, which were replaced for streaming and downloads. In the end, it forced me to buy the same crap over and over. The generation behind me has no idea how lucky they are they won’t have to do that. How much money could I have saved by only buying the songs I liked instead of the entire bloody album? The end result is that I currently have over 2,000 songs on my phone, which I consider a pretty substantial collection. Why do I have so much music on my phone? It's difficult to boil all these memories down to a single favorite, but one that first comes to mind is the day that I received my Texas State ring. Being an only child and a soon-to-be first generation college graduate, I tend to put a lot of pressure on myself in order to live a life that my parents weren't fortunate enough to. In addition, my parents have been divorced nearly my whole life which hasn't made my journey any easier. However, on the day of the ring ceremony, all three of my parents gathered together for the first time in my 22 years to watch me place that little piece of gold on my finger. Seeing the smiles on their faces all under the same roof was a feeling unlike any other, and for it to be because of my accomplishments was the icing on the cake. Receiving my Texas State ring was a huge milestone for my family and I. This is truly a memory that I will carry with me for a lifetime.

I have a love/hate relationship with school. I love learning and education. I hate the rules and regulations I'm forced to follow to get my degree. What I hate worse than being tested by the man, is exercise. So as a person with the body shape of the letter 'P', walking up the steepest hill to Old Main everyday for the past two years is actually the memory from Texas State that will stay in my memory for the rest of my life. Ever since I was a kid, I couldn't stand going to school. I just got bored with everything so quickly. I'm not saying I'm genius, I just get bored easily. However, I've always loved to learn. So when I started college, I quickly and foolishly realized that no one was there to hold me accountable. I stopped going and quickly faded out.  Cut to 2016 when I transferred to Texas State University to finally finish this chapter of my life, and , girl, it was a culture shock. Howdy, I was born in the small town of Rahway, New Jersey. I grew up there, going back and forth to New York, visiting my cousins in Brooklyn, running wild through the metropolitan streets. My family has never been wealthy, but I never knew that when I was a kid. Growing up in Jersey, we had everything. We had our neighbors, our families, our block party BBQ's that stunk up the small houses. When my parents told us we were moving to Texas, we didn't fight the idea. We saw horses and cowboys on TV. To us, Texas would be nothing short of a riot. What we didn't understand is that Texas was final. Texas was our new home. Moving to Texas meant leaving New Jersey. Through this misunderstanding brewed a deep, visceral hatred for Texas. It didn't help that we were introduced to racism, scalding heat, and having to pump our own gas here. It took a very long time for me to even like Texas. It wasn't until I was given my dad's old truck did I start to learn about where...

My favorite memory at Texas State is attending my first tailgate for the Texas State v. UTSA football game. I had never attended anything like it and it was the first moment where I truly felt that I was living the college experience I had dreamt in my head in high school. The music was obnoxiously loud, the heat was close to unbearable and the rowdiness was out of control. Yet, I wouldn't have wanted it to be any other way. Everyone was happy and having FUN and that is what makes college the best. Now I have transferred schools a couple times since starting my college career, and it has not been the typical experience that most kids my age experience. Texas State is the school that I had imagined my college to be like when I was younger. The tailgate was a great way to kick off the best semester I have ever experienced in college.

When I chose to come to Texas State, I was not excited. I was nervous, scared, and anxious to start a new life on my own with my best friend by my side. That all changed once I showed up in San Marcos. I have grown so much while being in this city and at this school. I call this place home now. My favorite memory to have from Texas State is impossible to say because there are too many memories that I never want to forget. I met some of the best friends I have ever had down here, got my first dog, got my first internship, this place has morphed me into a better me in due time. The connections I have made at Texas State will last a lifetime. The people in this city are all so different and unique, that is why I love it so much. You always see people just being their self. I love that one day I get to tell my kids or family all the amazing memories I had at this school with the people I love.

Attending Texas State University is one of the best decisions I've ever made. Before enrolling at this university I went to a Bobcat Day with my family to learn about what the university had to offer but I was also even more excited to learn about on-campus residential life. That day I visited Tower Hall and after going on a tour and asking questions I knew that it was the perfect place to live in. A lot of people may not know but Tower Hall is a living-learning community in which all student residents have a common career track. My floor was composed of students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Living at Tower Hall with other students that were pursuing similar careers was an incredible experience and one that I will always cherish. We all had the same courses and got the chance to know each other very well through study groups and learning community bonding activities.
