The Most Favorite Thing I Did During the First Part of the Summer

By Kevin Schulte

My favorite thing I did this summer was watching my son race league karts at the Circuit of the Americas kart track. I realize most of you aren’t parents yet, but let me tell you that watching your child compete in sports is a pretty cool thing. It can be very emotional and thrilling. Sports contain great life lessons. My son has learned how to be a good sport and not be a sore loser. He’s also learning how to be a good friend who's there to pick up his buddies when they have a bad race. Also, like life, he’s learned that sometimes things are out of his hands. Meaning, some karts are slower than other karts. It’s the luck of the draw. It’s no different from professional racing where sometimes the mechanics can’t get Jimmie Johnson’s car dialed in for the Daytona 500 – @#*! happens. As a parent you want your child to succeed, but at the end of the day seeing them having a passion for something can be just as important.

(second place)

Sports teach kids about perseverance, goals, hard work and patience; the latter being very important in today’s electronic world of immediacy. You can’t feel the heat of a summer day or the thrill of competition by watching YouTube. Sports remind us that the more significant lessons of life are when we interact with others. It’s old school I know. Regardless, my son is learning lessons that will help shape him for the rest of his life. Lessons that he doesn’t realize will help him become the best version of himself.
