Blog #1 - Authority

I’m not the greatest at many things. Throw a football at me, I’ll drop it. If theres a dance step to learn, I’ll miss it. But the topic that I know I’m an authority on, is Britney Spears.

Who is Britney Jean Spears?

Funny you should ask. She is a Sagittarius, born on December 2, 1981. Spears is from the small town of Kentwood, Louisiana. It’s where her parents (Lynne and James) raised their middle-class family of three, until Britney exploded onto the pop culture forefront.

Her debut single and album, …Baby One More Time, made history when both debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. This milestone made her the youngest artist to achieve this feat.

Her second album, Oops! I Did It Again, also made history, selling over 1 million copies in its first week of availability. It was, at the time, the largest opening sales week by a female artist.

Her fourth album, In The Zone, saw a complete transition from teen pop star to fully grown woman. She began to take control of her sound, image and put forth an energy of confident woman exploring her sexuality.

The second single, “Toxic”, became a Billboard Top 10 hit, won Spears her first Grammy and has become one of her signature songs to straight people.

Why would anyone care this much about a mediocre vocally talented singer?

Because in 2005, Spears married the Devil. This unholy union started the downfall of “The Holy Spearit”.

Spears was married, delivered two children and divorced by the end of 2006.

In 2007, she was spotted partying more frequently, began talking in a weird British accent, seen going into gas station bathrooms barefoot and constantly eating Cheetos.

The most bizarre moment came when Britney was caught shaving her own head in a beauty salon and later attacking paparazzi with an umbrella. The most cringeworthy moment was her 2007 Video Music Awards performance. She was out of sync with the dancers, backing track and simply laughed her way through it. However, the scariest and most tragic moment  was when she was held involuntarily at a psychiatric ward for barricading herself and her youngest son, Jayden, in her bathroom at her Malibu home.

However, 2008 saw the resilience of Spears. Her father became the conservator of her estate and (with the help of her mother) started clearing out the weeds that began to overgrow Britney.
The end of 2008 became a triumphant return. She released her sixth album, Circus, which debuted at number one, won three Video Music Awards (including “Video of the Year”) and embarked on her first world tour since 2004.

Since then, Britney has gained four number one singles, released three albums, a successful perfume line, returned and slayed the VMA stage and finished a four-year Las Vegas residency, which grossed over $138 million.

Britney Spears isn’t just a woman who lip syncs to songs and dances extremely well. She’s a woman who was on the verge of death, made it through the fires of hell, walked to the Devil himself, and said, “You wanna piece of me?”
